An afternoon adventure at Centenary Lakes, Caboolture

I met Suzy, Fred and their two adorable boys at Centenary Lakes in Caboolture for a photoshoot full of fun and adventure. We moved around the lakes from spot to spot chasing the sunlight and working through a range of activities to create some lovely family moments.

Thanks for a relaxed afternoon taking photos of our family. Our 3 year old quickly warmed to you and you were patient with him when the crazies kicked in.

Suzy mentioned that Rowan loves to go fishing so they brought along his fishing rod. These made for some great moments between Fred and his boys as they pretended to fish in the lake.

Extended Family Portraits at Centenary Lakes, Caboolture

Anita contacted me looking for family photos as they have recently welcomed a new addition to the family and hadn’t had family portraits taken since 2013. This was also a great time to get the whole family together and share in the family portrait experience.

Extended family portrait sessions offer many opportunities to capture all combinations of the entire family and provide family keepsake images for everyone involved. It is always great to get the whole family including the grandparents and the generational images.

There are so many locations in Centenary Lakes at Caboolture for photo opportunities. As it was fairly early in the afternoon we chose a shady spot away from other park goers, the dense trees provided a really nice green backdrop. Click here to learn more about portratis in Parks and Gardens.

Shortly after the photoshoot I met up again with Anita and Scott to view their images and select how they want to display their artwork.

A 16x20” Canvas was chosen for their favourite family photo, along with a story box of ten 8x10” Matted Prints. Anita requested black matt boards to match her other family photos at home. These matts measure 11x14” which is perfect if you wish to frame them yourself.

An afternoon at Centenary Lakes, Caboolture

The Bell family won a portrait experience voucher through their local family daycare centre. It was a delight to meet them all and spend the afternoon together at Centenary Lakes.

One of my favourite spots at Centenary Lakes is a large fig tree tucked away from everyone else. In this location you will find not only the tree but stairs, rocks, water, park benches and an open field set away from the crowds. Click here to learn more about portraits in parks and gardens.

A week after the photo shoot we all met up again to view the images, I helped Vanessa and Martin select how they wanted to display their images.

A 16x20” canvas was picked to show off the whole family portrait, along with a story box of ten 8x10” matted prints in colour and black and white.

Little Family Portraits: Clayton Park Beachmere

Bunt Family Portraits: Briggs Avenue Beachmere

Four generations in the same place and time; it must be wonderful for the little ones to grow up with their great grandparents and in turn for the great grandparents to enjoy and cherish a third group of young ones.

Terri's daughter Anna arranged for the photo shoot on short notice in the hopes of being able to have some family photos taken quite soon while the whole extended family group of fourteen were all available.  I was tasked with finding a suitable location that was easily accessible for the oldest generation to visit.  After scoping a number of parks, Clayton park off Briggs Avenue in Beachmere was a winner.

With everyone gathered I started with the larger group shot of the entire family and moved onto great grandparents and the great grandchildren.  Younger couples next, followed by the smaller family groups.  The youngest boys were not overly keen to have their photos taken and needed some persuasion and coaxing from their older cousins,

Shandaleigh & Norm: Elimbah Wedding

Shandaleigh and Norm had their wedding in early January at their property in Elimbah, they had spent months and months preparing the barn and the bar for this momentous occasion.  This photo above of the happy family in the back of the old Valiant is by far my favourite photo of the day.

The barn was full of colour and fairy lights, the table decorations were created from rusty iron and native flowers from the property and were positioned in the centre of an eclectic mix of well worn tables and chairs.

Norms bar was off to the side of the reception hall, here the boys had a couple of coldies to cool the nerves.

Throughout the barn were brightly coloured doorways and fabrics draped in fairy lights which gave me so many backgrounds to work with.

The ceremony was held in the back yard under the sweeping branch of a huge jacaranda tree with rich greenery behind.

Shandy and Norm wanted to keep the day quite informal and just hang out and relax, we all headed down to the local skate park and got the boards out.

Thank you Stuart for your amazing photos! You went above and beyond before, during and after the big day. We highly recommend Stuart’s photography, both quality work and friendly, easy going personality

Portraits in Urban Locations

Having your family or engagement photos taken in an outdoor location requires a lot more planning than showing up for a photoshoot in a studio but you don’t have to worry because I’m here to guide you through choosing the best times for your favourite locations.

  • Bright and Vibrant, Dark and Moody, Gritty

  • Greys, Browns, Blacks, Whites, and Bold Colours

  • Be bold with patterns or colours

  • Any time of day and night

It's quite surprising what you can find close to home.  I find urban locations to be quite intimate places featuring rough walls and textures.  It's hard to beat the Powerhouse at Newstead but if you look closely, hidden gems can be found close to home.

Urban areas are often quite drab with shades of greys and browns, sometimes covered in graffiti or overgrown greenery, or you may find walls covered in bright solid colours.  Bright and bold clothing, both in colour and pattern, lend themselves well to Urban backgrounds.

These locations are typically shaded and dark but you can find the off open area that will get some rays, however most of the time will be in soft light or artificial light such as flashes.

A variety or moods can be created within an urban setting such as light and bright, warm and intimate, cool, dark and grungy.  You should be able to shoot at anytime of the day or night but it depends on how you want your image to look and feel, and also what best suits your desired urban hang out.

Portraits in Parks and Garden Locations

Having your family or engagement photos taken in an outdoor location requires a lot more planning than showing up for a photoshoot in a studio but you don’t have to worry because I’m here to guide you through choosing the best times for your favourite locations.

  • Bright and Vibrant

  • Greens, and Yellows

  • Wear light colours to pop

  • Any time of the day

Your local park is the perfect place to have your family or engagement portraits.  The gardens are well manicured and you can always find a wonderfully soft patch of grass to throw out a picnic rug.  There are hundreds of parks in the greater Moreton Bay region and beyond, but a few of my favourites are Centenary Lakes in Caboolture, Lake Eden in North Lakes, and Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens.

Photos taken in parks and gardens are generally going to be bright and vibrant with lots of green to fill out the background, so you will want to wear something light and bright that will pop against the dark green backdrops.  There is usually a variety of backgrounds, walkways, and bridges to use in your photos and with so much variety and activity it will be quite fun and give great opportunity for candid images.

To avoid harsh overhead light, these locations are best shot early morning and late afternoon.  At these times you can expect nice golden light which is perfect for backlighting and flares.  Suffice to say you could still shoot here at any time of day as you can always find great leafy canopies to help soften the light.

Katrina: Urban Maternity Shoot in Caboolture

Just a few photos from our maternity shoot with the ever talented and patient Stuart C Photography. The hardest part of the whole process is deciding on which photos to put on our walls - Brenton and I just love them! FYI - Gids had the absolute BEST time playing in the leaves and collecting sticks in the bush!
— Katrina

Katrina came to me asking for an urban style maternity shoot, her last maternity shoot was at the Power House but this time wanted something different and a bit closer to home.  I spent quite a few nights pondering locations and then headed out on a weekend mission to find the right locations around Caboolture.

We met up in the centre of town where I had found three very different spots in the one area.  Katrina's parents came along to the photoshoot which was excellent as they could chase after the little guy when he wasn't particularly interested in being in front of the camera.

After the shoot and the first selection of images were edited, we all met up again at a local cafe for the reveal, it is so nice to see the reactions in person.
